I have seen a number of yachts with their saloon tables protected by a clear plastic sheet that is heat-resistant and I guess about 4/5mm thick.

Can anyone tell me what is normally used e.g. acrylic or polycarbonate, and where I might buy some in a large enough size as I would rather have one piece?

I remember seeing some on a roll at Force 4 in Lymington, but the roll wasn't wide enough for our saloon table which is approx 1070x630mm

I have used the same PVC that canvas makers use for bimini windows etc, available in various thicknesses, although probably not as thick as 4mm, and pretty cheap as I recall, I think it cost about £25 for enough to do almost every flat wood surface on our 42 ft cat.

I bought from Kayospruce, a google will find the website and a phone call will get you very helpful staff and probably some free samples.

If the stuff is very carefully cut and laid it practically sticks itself to the surface and you can hardly tell it is there. Not sure if you really need 4 or 5 mm thick, that seems a bit too much and probably difficult to fit so it looks good. Ours is around 1mm and we still use coasters, especially for hot drinks. Not sure any flexible plastic is going to be heat resistant enough to put hot drinks on without some risk of distortion. Ours has now been in place for over 4 yrs and is still in very good condition - even the piece fitted to our cockpit table is original and still good.
