Cleaning

Just acquired a Sealine 285. Can anyone help with how to clean the below deck upholstry? It's fabric covers with foam inside (which is mainly unzippable albeit I will need to cut button strings) and I'm worried that if I wash the fabric, it will shrink. The stains are mainly general dirt and mildew. I have tried surface cleaning with "Vanish", "1001" etc. but this has made little difference. Suggestions (preferably from experience!) appreciated.

Some chandlers sell a mould and mildew remover, which I think works on carpets and cushions and is v.good. Compass sell one - I dont know how good that is though.

Any decent quality upholstery cleaner should do the job, it's having the right machine to do it.
Try your local D.I.Y hire centre, failing that get the pro's. in.

Hi!
How about unpicking the covers at the shortest point and removing the foam. Then check with Sealine what the material is or take it to a dry cleaners, they will have a pretty good idea and then warm wash them in "comfort" or similar softener . It may be worth installing the foam in its own "rough cover" of mutton cloth type fabric to stop it snagging on the covers whilst re-ftting it. if you do wash them try an insignificant piece first in case it turns out to be a mega job.

I had mildew spots in the fabric of my cushions and after trying all sorts of other cleaners like car upholstery cleaners etc. I searched the web and came to the conclusion that the only way to shift mildew spots was with bleach !

I was really nervous about using any concentration of bleach but eventually wound up trying Flash spray with bleach. I applied it sparingly and made sure it was thoroughly rinsed off after and it worked a treat.

Definitely a job for the summer though cos drying the cushions out any other time would be a nightmare.

We recently aquired a new boat which also had some staining due to a leaking wiper motor housing. The mrs spent a couple of hours on this and a few other stain marks with a "Mr muscle fabric cleaner" (at least I think it was mr muscle it was a foam type anyway) The results were fantastic it removed staining that we never thought would come off, also good on carpets we were very impressed. So get down to nearest Tesco or the like and get some for the Mrs.

Thanks for the responses. I've removed a lot of the stuff from the boat. It's now in our conversatory which will give it a good chance of drying out OK. The foam cleaner does seem to be quite effective.

When we acquired the good ship Ballena, the interior linings had some mould marks on. We used Starbrite mould remover, and it was brilliant, no sign of it coming back.

Test a small patch first though
