Cleaning waterways on VP2002

Hi folks,
One of my grand ideas is to clean the scale, gunge, etc from the cooling waterways in our rawwater cooled 2002. The plan is to disconnect the water inlet hose adjascent to the gearbox and pump some substance into the engine which will clear the waterways, rather like putting antifreeze in the engine.Can anyone advice on what to use, and could this idea cause any damage to the engine, hoses etc.

For removing scale from small outboards I have used tablets sold for descaling toilets! I mix up a strongish batch and then run the outboard in this until warm, then flush with fresh water for 15-20 minutes to remove any residue. It has saved me having to strip engines, and been without any noticeable ill effects after long further use. It may be possible to adapt this method to your intended use...

Fernox, or kettle de-scaler will all work.

But nothing makes 'em fizz like Hydrochloric Acid (buy brick and masonery cleaner - cheap from builders merchants). I use 10% solution and dilute to taste (1:4ish parts water).

I drain down and pour into engine through thermostat housing. This means it gets to where it is most needed and doesn't affect gearbox and water pump (much). Rinse well by running engine after about an hour and have a look into cylinder head via thermostat housing to see whether a repeat match is required.
