Yes Ed, it is called pickling paste you will get it from welding material suppliers it is a very strong acid in a jelly and you brush it on, then wash it off with plenty of water. And it does work.

Pickling paste works a treat but needs to be used with the full panoply of protective gear, including apron, gloves, facemask and goggles.

If you're trying to get the surface corrosion off, a far better alternative are the finishing pads, made by 3Ms and looking very much like an oversize scouring pad, which are used in the industry to finish and polish stainless steel fabrications.
It's cheaper, less dangerous and very much more effective than pickling paste, which should only be used under controlled conditions and thoroughly washed off.
However pickling paste is the cleaner of choice for crevice corrosion.

By the by, an ordinary scouring pad is useless - it's not hard enough and is too coarse.

The paste is the stuff to use, but is a bitch if you get it anywhere you dont want it! If the meatal work is on the boat and you want to get rid of tarnish, try Autosolvo gold. I give all the stainless a going over at the start and end of the season. Keeps it looking bright for ages. A tube will last ages. It cost around £3.50

OK, to hell with it. Unbolt it and we'll use it as an anchor!
