My boat came with a plate with RYA embossed/engraved on it and my boat's SSR number. It is mainly a blackish sort of colour with the number a greenish colour. I don't know what the material is, but I'm guessing it has some bronze in it? Does anyone have a similar plate and if so, do they clean it with anything in particular. Is it supposed to be black with greenish numbers, or should it clean up to bright metal? Anyone got any advice?

maybe post a pic so someone can see wha metal it is before advising. I would think brass polish and a green steel wool should be ok. I am not sure that this will not scratch it which is why no one has replied as yet, try a small area first and it should be ok.

Not sure it would photo very well as it is basically black with greenish numbers. I tried Brasso on it - a bit unenthusiastically because I didn't want to make a mess of it -but it had no effect. Might not even be metal, come to think of it - but the greenish stuff made me think it was. As it has the RYA logo on it, I assume it is something that was mass produced at some time and that other people would have them.

Have you tried sticking it in a load of Coca Cola ?? Does wonders for Brass etc. ..... squirt lemon juice over it ...
