Can someone give me some ideas on how to clean a grubby Musto Coastal trousers and jacket. The dirt is mostly teak-oil from sitting on or rubbing against treated wood, and coal-dust from the quays just across the harbour.

My first instinct was to just put them in the washing machine with a mild detergent, but I seem to recall that that may destroy the impermeabilization.

Specific questions:

- Is giving them a wash in a machine a good idea?
- With what detergent?
- Hot or cold water?
- Can the impermeabilization be restored or refurbished?
- If so, by applying what substance (liquid) ?

Other than the dirty cuffs and trouser bottoms, the suits are in good condition, as they don't get much use in our climate, so replacing is not an option !!!!

The Musto washing instruction label specifically states NON bio detergent .
Washing machine is fine on about 40 degrees.
To reproof, put the clean garments into the machine again with the appropriate proportion of a re-proofer like Nikwax TX-Direct ( from most outdoor equipment shops) in the dispenser. Run on a synthetic cycle.
You can tumble dry on a low heat.

You may have to treat badly soiled areas separately before you do the first wash.

Well, thanks all for your replies.

There is no longer any question about what should be done. I was sent to the super for some urgent supplies this afternoon and when I got back the suit was in the washer at 30 degrees and tumbling nicely. Earlier I had used Oxyaction (from Dia, a Spanish version of Lidl type shop) to clean the cuffs and ends of the trouser legs.

Now it just remains to see whether that treatment has done any harm. At first glance, none. The fabric, when held in a "catch water" shape, holds water in the depression with no water escaping below the garment. So I'll just hold my fingers crossed and hope for the best. If reproofing is needed, I'll consult Musto before trying Nikwax TX-Direct.
