Cleaning Multi-Pin Plugs

It depends on the connector and size. Some connectors will allow the pins to be pulled out other than that rolled up wet and dry fine grade or small wire brushes, WD40 or a proprietary contact cleaner like Servisol
I make my own contact cleaning sticks with McDonald's wooden stirrers with 1000 grade wet and dry stuck to the end.

Unless desperate, I'd avoid abrasives.
I'd spray it with a light contact oil, or something like GT85, plug it in an out a few times and spray with solvent to rinse. Let it dry then a bit more contact oil and give it a try.

Over time some types of multi plug get loose, especially with the more times they are broken and mated again. It isn't uncommon to do as Graham has done and chop them off, replacing with either another multi plug or a decent connector strip (BlueSea terminal strip) or a good quality brass strip.

I like to use dielectric grease in engine rooms and laz, lockers, etc on all new and clean existing connections. This really does seem to make a positive difference.
