Hi All.

We have a Bavaria 32 which we have had now for about 5 years. As time has gone by we have noticed that shaking out reefs to a full sail is getting harder, we have to pull the reef lines out of the end of the boom before we can hoist to a full sail. We feel that we would like to get inside the boom to clean and inspect that all is well in there but it all seems to be potrivited together except for the end of the boom which has 4 alun screws.

Has anyone had any experience at cleaning or maintaining a Selden boom before we take it apart and end up with screw left over when we put it back together again!

Thanks in advance

If you go to this page of the Selden website and download the "Outhaul block replacement" guide, it has good diagrams showing the reefing mechanism and should help you understand what you'll find inside the boom.

The only way is to take it apart and it's really very easy. You have the additional benefit that you can have a proper look at everything and renew as necessary.
Tip for drilling the rivets out is to go for an oversize drill, about 8mm. Drill carefully and the heads will come off with a little chamfer, use a steel drift to knock the rest of the rivet through.

Its quote common for the little plastic wheels on the internal reefing blocks to have broken and this causes loads of friction.
Its worth having some spares before you start
