My old Kingfisher is apparently blessed with gunmetal deck fittings. These, like the rest of the boat, are showing signs of many years neglect. What is the best/easiest way to clean them? Preferably nothing involving too much hard work,i've got enough of that to do on the rest of the boat!

Salt and vinegar-simmer in a pan but don't breath in the fumes.
Also don't do it when swmbo is about particularly if using a large frying pan on portholes!
This is as good as brown sauce if items are removable.
Once done if you clear varnish items they will keep their shine far longer.

Old Varnish started a thread recently on a similar topic - cleaning a badly tarnished brass barometer. He had no success whatsoever with weird chemical methods but was finally very pleased with mechanical ones. I believe he bought a small polishing kit.
