I removed my Plastimo 100 litre flexible water tank and brought it home to try to determine why the water tastes so bl**dy awful in a one year old tank.

There was various slimey gunk inside which seems to have come out with a good flush with the hose pipe. However, as the water is flushing through I think I'm seeing slight traces of oil. I did have a problem with a spilage around the tank and it's possible some got in.

How should I clean it ?or should I bin it and buy a new one ? (a bit loathed as this one is nearly new)

cheers

Roger - see the thread under the Motor Boat Chat forum, dated Friday 23rd Nov entitled Drinking Water posted by boatone. This should give you a clue as to what to do - and call Dave Street if in doubt (his contact number is in the threads).

A clue to keeping it clean, once it's clean, is simply to keep it well used. I, at least once a month, flush my water tank well through - hose pipe stuffed deep down into the tank and let it overflow/flush for 5 mins.

Milton wont remove oil, but if you fill & soak tank with washing detergent & slosh round, rinse ,& rinse & rinse , then milton it, it should be ok. lastly a hand full of ordinary portland cement, puts a calcine cover over the surface, Was used in the days of bitch painted tanks of old.

hope that helps

Yes, exactly. However, the preferred method is not flushing, but soaking. A solution of vinegar and water left to soak for two weeks! I don't remember the concentration, but it's in the Vetus catalogue or I can find it for you if you're still interested.

Roger, in addition to all the other remedies, may I suggest CHEMPRO a popular cleaner/steriliser in the home brewing market. Its essentially the same as 'Sterident' ... an oxidiser. Leave it in overnight and flush well...amazing what it removes.

Personally though, I replaced the flexibles with Stainless...saves the leaks as well.
