or use a solvent such as paraffin or diesel oil. Put the chain into a scrap 5 gallon container with 1 gallon of said solvent shake for 5 minutes discard solvent and remove clean chain. This will avoid removing any protective coating you may have on the chain also on the east coast not much sand available only mud! /forums/images/icons/frown.gif
I only suggested the chain thing because I have been out fishing on mixed gravel, shingle and sand banks and my stainless anchor has 'self cleaned' beautifull - best polishing job it's had.
I have about 120ft 3/8 chain ..... I wouldn't like to try and put that in a container and swish it about .... even if I could lift it !!!
You could always lay out in a close single layer 'cheese' and then power wash it off ..... that's waht I did last time, but I didn't have it greased up etc.

If your chain is blathered in oil etc Then do go for the barrel and parafin job. Even better fix two scrubbing brushes facing each other to pull the chain through, in the solvent. But please please wash the chain in hot soapy water and rinse well BEFORE IT GOES BACK IN THE SEA (think of the enviroment...
