Hi, I have a 1967 Osborne Kingswift with interesting provenance, plastic hull, wooden superstructure and original petrol engines. Does this qualify as classic boat?, if so, any advice on restoration or damage limitation gratefully recieved as this is my first boat/ boating experience and I have limited ideas on both subjects.

Hello,

I don't know much about the Kingswift, but a chap called APHAY also has an Osborne and may have background info as he is restoring his. I think his is a wooden hull but seems to know a lot about the yard. I am hoping to get up to Littlehampton soon and dig around, hopefully the museum there will have inherited some of the yards records when it finally closed.

Can you say any more about your boats history?

have to cut and paste, as i can't remember how to do the link thingy.

pm me if you want to share horror stories. but she definitely is a classic.

ben, met with colin white of lathams boatyard this morning, he's interested in doing some of the restoration work.

looked round the workshop.. outstanding quality.. what these guys can't do with a proper boat isn't worth doing!

Aztec knows provinance, he told me she might be no 1 Kingswift. Yards current users confirmed she was the boat show model for Suothampton and Earls Court, the current owner of the yard is in fact the son of the designer of the kingswift, he remembers going out in Humming Bird when she was on test prior to the launch. The sales brochure also features Humming Bird.

classic musings

eh? How can it be classic? Ok look, i've got a cheese sandwich container - that's not classic is it? What if it's a 1967 cheese sandwich container. What if it's a PRAWN sandwich container, and used by Lord wassisname in the cowes-torquay race of the same year. Hm, actually, i spose that *mite* be a classic...

i reckon that if you aren't sure - it NOT classic, really. Otherwise, everyone would know and there's be no question at all...

Re: classic tcm musings

tcm you might be an expert in sandwitch boxes and boats, classic or otherwise, but there are people on this planet who are new to boating and might not know what the definition of a classic boat is. As this forum is for all boaters, old or new, perhsps yuor comments wre not well thought out. As this probably isnt and leaves me open for a tirade of abuse from all and sundry.

What's the definition of a "classic"? My boat is a composite, GRP hull and wooden decks and cabin. It is a 1/2 ton IOR racing boat of the late 60's and 70's so i't been built around the same time as the poster's boat but does not necessarally make out to be a classic. People say my boat "looks very nice" or "she has nice lines" etc but there is nothing(criteria) that suggests she is a "classic" What's your view?
Regards.

Peter.

I find the notion of "Classic" very interesting. In the car field there was a time when people thought Austin A60's were classic. Of course they never were and never could be. If the Queen owned one then it may have some added value, but classic?
So with boats. Near to me are two old wooden boats. One is apparently the last production cruiser made of ply and the first to use outdrives (I don't know if this is true)

Pyewacket01.jpg

Is this then a classic?
Also there is a 1940s ChrisCraft. Nice wood, pretty sound, engines not so good.

Is this a classic? Or is it just an old boat?

My father started in the motor trade in the early 1930's, the scrap yards were full of Bullnose Morris's, Vauxhall Prince Henry's, model T's, yours for 10 bob. But at the time the view was who wanted an old car, they were just old and suitable for srap only, today are they scrap or a classic?. In 2075 what will a A60 be?.
My boat is plastic, a Buchanan design, moulded from a Buchanan Diamond, including the hull damage. But the Diamond according to some people is a classic, but the Halcyon 27 clone is not !!
It appears that a classic can be wood, steel and a few other things, but not plastic.
So this season I'm going to tow a tree trunk behind, well at least I'll have a classic tender.

Re: Classic definition

its a pre-1966 two-door Ford with cutback side profile whereas the olde Capri on the same floorpan is "flo-back" or "fast back". 40 years on - how sad is it that i know this?!

Re: Classic boat [Re: halcyon]

I do not know what is classic, it appears I should not have asked either.
Mine has plastic hull and wooden superstructure, no tender.
I get the impression that classic boats have no specification, cast in stone,
as motor vehicles do. How does the Classic Boat Club exist?.

I've been told a number of time on here that plastic does not count, still trying to find why it offends. To me you look at a boat and it's is a classic, it has classical lines, does not matter what it is made rom, just it feels right.

Re: ain\'t that the truth?

Not sure there is one, take the A60, to be honest cannot see it becoming a true classic, but a Riley 4/72 or Wolseley 16/60 could become a classic. They just have the same basic shell, but different front end, paint trim, and interior finish. They just have a feel, they look right, is it just the case it looks classy?. Is it just that?
