I recently found out about new boat, ClassGlobe 580. Its DIY, 5.80 meter plywood cruiser, cheap to build, capable for circumnavigation. Boat is based on ‘Setka’, tiny, 5 meter long DIY plywood ‘yacht’. Several of them (5-7) (all self made by amateurs) crossed Atlantic. Class website has lot of design details, including overview of CNC packs which can be ordered for builders, who prefer save time on buying and cutting parts. Its worth visiting: Home
Race itself will be hold in 2024, it has 6 legs: Concept
I personally really like idea of affordable crusing and racing and I like that Janusz Maderski, constructor of Setka, found recognition for his designs (he designed many DIY boats, from 3 to 12 meters). He crossed Atlantic in first Setka race, in 2012. Second competitor from 2012, set record for smallest boat for non-stop circumnavigation (from Plymouth to Plymouth) in 6.36 meters yacht, last year.
