With your job, cannot you answer this yourself, or do you want me and ShipsCat to write another epic?

Erm, well we don't use VHF in the same way as it is used for Marine use. Anyway, I know what DSC is because I have Class D DSC sets on the boat now, however a google search revealed nothing about the legality of using Class A with a SRC.

Lets /forums/images/icons/smile.gif - I am still awake.

But I think the answer is simple - yes. However, now that the UK seems to have drifted away from the new ITU standard for Class D for the pleasure vessel requirement it may be there is something about a GMDSS compliant Class A radio that does not meet the UK requirements for pleasure vessels (a Class D radio has a subset of the Class A functionality).

However, I could not imagine any sensible administration not accepting a GMDSS Class A radio in a pleasure vessel as they are sure to accept those radios for the SOLAS vessels that are flagged with them.

Does that make sense? /forums/images/icons/smile.gif.

It's top of the range and has functions not necessary to the type of boats we all use

Class A:
All DSC options provided. Required on MF/HF and VHF radios used by SOLAS-regulated ships. Class A includes polling and vessel tracking, data, and numerous other functions in addition to voice.

So I am allowed to use it but it doesn't meet the requirements for a pleasure boat despite exceeding them/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Thanks to both of you.

Class A dsc is used by the big ships and is much more user friendly than class d.

The display is larger and mAny of the commands are direct one key entries without going to sub menus of sub menus as in Class D which require you to keep a waterproof copy of the manual next to the DSC transmitter in order to carry out what should be a simple operation..

Just read the manual for some of the latest budget DSC radios.

A good class A DSC used to cost about £1000 hence thr reason not many are seen in the local marina.
