The PeteM family are going on a cruise departing from Civitavecchia (Rome) in August. Being a skinflint I was unwilling to pay the £700 or so for 3 flights. So we've got to make our own way there.

Now, the cruise departs at around 7pm so I guess we'll aim to be on board by mid afternoon. So my questions are..

1) Should we go to Rome for the night before?
2) Which airport do we fly to (Rome is served by two airports)?
3) We'll go straight home after the cruise. Which airport in the most accessible from Civitavecchia?
4) Are taxis viable for the distances?

All advice gratefully received.

Thanks, Pete

1) No need to go to Rome night before _ but hey it is a great place
2) FCO is closest to port (1/3 rd of way to port from Rome°
3) See 2
4) We are talking Italy _ taxi only way to do it and not too expensive
5) The port is a dump

Definitely yes, it's a fantastic city. Do Spanish Steps. Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona, Pantheon...could select the high spots from a Dan Brown book
2) Which airport do we fly to (Rome is served by two airports)? There's Leonado di Vinci which the big carriers go to (and are not so expensive these days) thats about 40 miles from C. The other one is at Ciampino about 55miles and the likes og Ryan air go there.
3) We'll go straight home after the cruise. Which airport in the most accessible from Civitavecchia? answer above
4) Are taxis viable for the distances? They will be expensive for that distance. Get a train ...super clean cheap and reliable. For this reason get a hotel near to Termini in Rome.
have a good time

Thanks guys I knew I could rely on you!

From what you say I'm planning.....

Early morning flight day before to Fiumicino (Leonardo Da Vinci)
Train to Rome
Overnight in Rome (can anyone recommend a hotel near to the station approx £100pn)
Midday train to Civitavecchia
Cruise
Taxi to Fiumicino (looks like €130)
Home.

Sound OK?

The scammers way/

Stay in hotel that US folks are booked in ;;; telll cruise line that you will join them for tx to ship (note _ train station some way from commercial berths) ..; do , on board for tx from CTV to FCO ... surprised taxi tx is that much , don,t recall that price ;

Good Hotels in Rome abound ... don,t know train station (nor share David,s enthusiasm for ITI trains !!)

Are you going on the Sunbird? Stopped at C/V last june for trip to Rome. If your cruising on to Pisa/ Florence dont expect to go up the leaning tower. There was a 6hr booking wait when I was there. Best get together with fellow passengers with minibus, book Pisa on way to Florence and visit tower on way back. Dave.
