Round Ireland Monohull Speed Record Attempt 2005
"CityJet takes 3/4 of a day off the Round Ireland speed record"
Crossing the finish line at the Kish at 0414 on Fri 6th May 2005, skipper Jean Philippe Chomette and his 7 man crew brought the 60-footer in in 57 hours, 41 minutes taking a full 17 hours 46 minutes off the previous monohull record, set in 2002.
Cautiously optimistic of shaving a few hours off the record when they set off last Tues, no one would have predicted they could make such an impact on the existing one.
With an average speed for the entire trip of 12.2 knots, they averaged 16 knots from Belfast Lough overnight.
Background:
French Yachtsman Jean Philippe Chomette will try to beat the Round Ireland Speed Record when he and his seven man crew start their second attempt in 11 months onboard the cityjet.com sponsored yacht. Last minute sail changes are currently being made for a planned 6pm start on Tuesday, 3rd May. The Paris based financier smashed the Round Britain and Ireland record last year by 3 days and needs an average speed of 9.4 knots to beat the Irish record and be off the Kish starting / finishing point by Friday. Progress To Date:
04 May / Morning
Having crossed the start line at the Kish lighthouse yesterday evening at 6.33 pm, Jean Philippe Chomette and his crew are currently 2 hours ahead of schedule in their latest attempt to slice time off the 3 days, 3 hours and 27 minutes Round Ireland record set last year.
Passing the Fastnet Rock this morning at 7 am, progress is better than expected as they now face into the challenging west coast run, to complete the course in under 70 hours..
04 May / 1600
"CityJet" is now well under way and was off Mizen Head at 1100, almost 6 hours ahead of schedule.
However with a long beat into a north-westerly wind to contend with, skipper Jean Philippe expects some of this advantage to be whittled away in the course of the night, with speeds dropping from an average 12.7 to 7.5 knots.
Their advantage should hold if, as predicted the wind backs to the west.
04 May / 0750
Passing Eagle Island off the Donegal coast at 0750 today, "CityJet" has averaged a speed of 10.8 knots to get through a patch of weather that had been of concern.
Currently reaching in 25 knot winds at speeds of up to 17 knots, Jean Philippe and his crew are aiming to reach Rathlin Island before a tide change.
They are currently 5.5 hours ahead of the record.
05 May - 1700
Speaking by satellite phone at 1700, Jean Philippe Chomette has confirmed "CityJet" is looking at reaching Rathlin Island by 1900 this evening, putting her currently 14 hours ahead of the existing record. While he is unsure if they can sustain the wind speeds through the northern channel, Jean Philippe is on target to reach the finish line within a 2 hour window of 0630 on Fri morning. The next update is expected at midnight tonight.
