Engine running fine, but new scraping noise has developed. Nothing idle, but builds and increases with revs, in and out of gear. Gear box seems fine, raw impeller as well, nothing obvious chafing, checked for secondary vibration in all the lockers, nil. Disconnected the belt and ran the engine, no noise. Am I right in presuming it is either the alternator or circulation pump bearings? If the former, is it worth trying to get it repaired, or is it best to just get a new one...it's probably the original from about '96. Is there an obvious way to check it is the pump and not the alternator before I get my wallet out ?? Thre are no obvious leaks from the pump, but I do lose a very tiny amount of coolant.

I am surprised if not the altertnator fan. It is not unusual for this to get dinged and then for a vane to touch the alternator body.

Examine the fan behind the alternator pulley very carefully and make sure none of the vanes are touchng the alternator body. Judicious use of a screwdriver will cure the noise.

Engine off- remove drive belt- spin the alternator or water pump pulley by hand, you will soon feel or hear the rough bearing.
