its a proper little boat, good sea-keaping with a deep longish keel. stiff by modern standards.
built around mid 60s ( like a brick out-house).

Bought my Cinder 22 in a pretty poor state last year and am in the process of bringing it back to life while still using it for day sailing. As Sailorman says they are very solid - no balsa cores here, just solid thick GRP laminate. In terms of dimensions very similar to a Hurley 22, although arguably less pretty to look at. Designed by John Westall (who is also respoinsible for the 505 dinghy and the Nova 27), molded by Tylers (the first in 1963 I think) and completed by various builders (mine in Luton!). Something around 70 built, mine is No. 47 (1966). Over 50% balast ratio with a long encapsulated keel, but the narrow 7ft beam makes her initially tender. One thing that is significantly better than on the H22 is that the rudder is attached to the bottom of the keel meaning that the risk of picking up a rope around the spade type rudder of the H22 is eliminated. The prop is also more protected. I have been out in a good 30 knots without any problem - quite fun infact! Overall sails very well, well balanced (no problems with weather-helm) but the rather bluff bow means that beating/motoring into a chop can be slow. Probably a little more space than a H22 down below. No internal molding in the cabin, all fit-out is proper joinery. I have a Yanmar 1GM (6.5 Hp) which is adequate giving top speed of 5.5 knots. Take a look at http://www.boatsandyachts4sale.co.uk/boats/609/609-1.htm for some pictures of one that has been for sale for a while.

PM me if you have any questions.
Phil

Hi Roger,

I currently have a 10x8 3-bladed fixed prop which I bought 2nd hand, the blades on this are quite small in area (narrow). It is OK but possibly a bit small, some problems with cavitation into a head wind/sea and engine will rev from tickover to 3500 in gear without hesitation. Not sure how much this problem is due to small blade area rather than overall dimensions/pitch. 3000 revs gives about 5.5 knots in flat conditions. Gearbox is 2.21:1. I now also have a 10x10 with normal "Mickey-Mouse ears" blades, but I have not got round to fitting it yet. I should add that I previously had a 9.9 hp outboard fitted which would give 6 knots flat out which must be about hull speed for a 17 ft waterline. With a 1GM10 in your son's Cinder I would think a slightly larger prop would suit.
