pardon the stupid newbie type question,but where does it say 15-20kn ?

i can see the isobars and the pressure readings but where does it give wind speed and direction?
 
If you look at the little arrows, the 'feathers' on them indicate windspeed.... each long 'feather' represents 10kts, and a short 'feather' represents 5kts... so a short and long together is 15kts etc.... the arrow shows the direction, with the feathers arranged as per on an arrow.... commonly, a chart that shows these is known as a GRIB, and in some cases, as with this one, are overlayed with the pressure gradients, or synoptics.

Can I recommend this site, which allows you to download GRIBS for free, and is an excellent bit of software.
 
its not as good as a Guapacast, is it?

All these pictures and squiggly lines are rubbish.


2-4 Variable. Thats the real forecast.
 
thanks neil,ive downloaded that site,my little macg is no good after 25kn,so it looks like ill be staying close to wells.

now i know what those arrows mean /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Its also really important that you select a large enough area to get a good general appreciation of what the weather systems are doing....

Gribs are calculated using a sufficiently low resolution that using them to get a forecast for a specific spot can be very misleading.... if there is strong wind around the area that you have picked, then it could well appear in the area that at first glance looks OK....

On top of that, they are only forecasts, and as the last 24hrs have demonstrated only too well, can change dramatically in little time...

I'm sure you already appreciated that, but for the benefit of anyone else who reads this thread and is maybe a bit newer to weather forecasting and monitoring...

Thanks for this Morgana, SWMBO and me regularly check the met office forcast to see what we can expect for our sailing as well as me checking weatherweb.tv and try and bring together a combined consensus as to what may be going on.

Regarding selecting area size, would selecting the wash down to north foreland and across to the continent be enough to get a reasonable gauge for what to expect out and about in the Blackwater.

Yes.... what you need to look for is the movement of the various lows and highs around, and consider what impact their movements could have if they were slightly different from the forecast... for example, with the current synoptics, there is a set of quite tightly packed isobars over the north of country later in the weekend... should this be further south than expected, then the wind will be somewhat stronger than expected.... over time you'll get a feel for what is and isn't likely to happen...
