Cillit Bang v\'s Y10 - The result

Anyone reading the previous post regarding yellow stains will remember the recommendation for Cillit Bang Grime and Limescale remover, at under £2 it sounded an attractive alternative to Y10 at £12 per tub, Bought some and took it to the boat this weekend, applied as per the instructions and ..... Nothing, not a thing happened, the stains were as yellow as ever, I thought perhaps my stains were different from others, went to adjacent Chandlers and saw Y10, bought some at about £12 and put it on, took about 3 goes, but it gave a 9/10 result.
The Cillit Bang may not be to the same formulation as the one mentioned, as it was in Latvia or somewhere and it was called Rust and Limescale remover, but there was no other alternative in this country.
My recommendation - dont bother with the Cillit Bang.

Re: Cillit Bang v\'s Y10 - The result

Cillit Bang is not even much good in the home IMO, Viakal cleans taps and limescale much better. Dont know if that means it would do the yellow stains better though?

Re: Cillit Bang v\'s Y10 - The result

Quite. Can't see Cillit stuff doing much on thick scale.

Cheapest option is still getting some oxalic acid, which will work

Re: Cillit Bang v\'s Y10 - The result

I have had very good results with Y10 and use it every year to remove yellow stains. However, one thing that I have found is that it works much better on a warm day; on a very cold day it doesn't seem to work at all.

Re: Cillit Bang v\'s Y10 - The result

I bought Cillit Bang for domestic use when it first came out. Found it absolutely useless on limescale.

Re: Cillit Bang v\'s Y10 - The result

Well there seems to be a fair polarisation of opinion here!

I've got some Y10 left and I might buy a bottle of the Cillit Bang (anyone know where such a daft name came from?) and try some comparative tests, maybe with pics a la SBC. Don't know when I'll get round to it, but probably in the next 2 or 3 weeks.

Re: Cillit Bang v\'s Y10 - The result

yep. Y10 is merely oxalic in dilute gel form.

I v strongly recommend the GRP renovator from wessex, worth a few boats clubbing together for the £100.

Re: Cillit Bang v\'s Y10 - The result

The other useful thing about Y10 was that it clung to the underside of the hull because it was in gel form the oxalic acid would not be as useful in those circumstances.

Well I don't know what you bought or how you did it ... but the Cillit L&R remover out here certainly worked as the photos show.

One point that I mentioned earlier and I repeat ... I worked it after leaving for a while ... I didn't do as the bottle says - just put on and leave. I reckon out of the 7 - 8 mins on the 2m section, I rubbed for about 3 - 4 mins .....

I for one am happy with Cillit L&R Remover .... and it most certainly keeps our bogs white out here ... where water is fed via iron pipes .... Sorry you lot have to spend a lot more ....... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: Cillit Bang v\'s Y10 - The result

One tip (not tried it myself) is to mix the Oxalic acid with wallpaper paste to get it to stick. I used the the Oxalic this year to freshen up the water line which it did, but left some stubborn stains from dried slime. Cillet Bang + elbow grease removed it very well.

What was the temperature when you used it, sbc?

Very good point. I'm using Radboud "Quick Clean" (available in the Netherlands ) for ten years now. It is an acid-based cleaner, with which I do the whole hull -without any effort- in under half an hour, if the temperature is above 15 degrees. Under about twelve, it does absolutely NOTHING .

Y10 temperature...

The tub of Y10 in my garage says on it "Use in temperatures above 10 Celcius". More support for my policy of only doing hull cleaning/antifouling in summer!

Temp when I used ....

What was the temperature when you used it, sbc? Some posts here suggest that Y10 and Oxalic need fairly warm day. It must have been pretty cold with you.

First try was with temp of about +5C .... the most successfulk though was when it was below 0C ... about -5C if I remember right. I know I had trouble as I couldn't use garden hose to rinse off ... it was frozen !! So had to bucket - chuckit rinse off !!

It would be if you mixed in a bit of wallpaper paste
