I have two devices with a cigar male fitting .

I know that I can purchase various fittings but I would like to reduce the bulk
and go totally USB.

I only need two wires of the power/data cable and could use an existing USB cable and join as required. The wires are very thin and I am not sure how to make a strong non bulky join. I am a great fan of those red 3M fittings where you snap a non stripped cable but would still might be bulky.

Just wondering if anyone has soldered the ends of a power cable directly to a
USB plug .

Thanks in advance

Why not just use one of the low profile plug-in adapters? Usually available for £2-3.
I used on of those but it was a bit hit an miss making an electrical connection with the cigar socket.

I think I have mis-understood . the OP is wanting to cut off a 12volt plug and fit a USB plug. But as said that will be no good as the USB voltage is 5V.

I assumed that he wanted to do as you say and then plug it into an adapter, as above.

Yes. Exactly.

Thanks chaps for the heads up on the USB 5v.

Shows how useful this forum is. I could have gone wading in and blown something.

Know what to do now.
