Chucking champagne bottles into the river - OK or not?

Having noticed today that Marsh Lock is broken, I am wondering if it's workings have been affected by the champagne bottle hurled from "Pixie of Wargrave" by the driver just upstream of the lock the other evening? (That was after not long after he had started out of the lock and came to a sudden stop so he could chat to someone waiting to enter the lock so causing us following to take hasty avoiding action!)

My wife and I watched him throw it and were quite astonished. I think the boat is used for charters, so he is quite happy to make financial gain from the river but is not prepared to respect it. He will happily dump his litter in the river - it's much easier than having to take it home with him.

No doubt there are plenty on here who will think I am an old fart and I am making a fuss about nothing; but can you imagine what the Thames would be like if every bottle emptied on a boat during Henley week was tossed over the side.
 
umm, there's no identification that the owner was the driver at the time of the bottle throwing. But he may like to confirm or deny it ?
 
OG I take your subtle point. I wouldn't normally have even mentioned the incident, accept in this case the perpetrator makes a living from the use of the river.

if the dropping of the bottle was witnessed why was it not reported to the relevant authoroties but posted on here??? and then whinge.I have no sympathy for people that will hide behind a keyboard and NOT take action
 
I think that naming and shaming is the best route. The EA only seem to act rarely and at random.

Personally, I have no time for people who hide behind a keyboard whining about other people hiding behind a keyboard.

It was reported (EA) - to be met with complete disinterest.

Really and truthfully , what did you expect to be done ?

Someone would need to take a statement from you , you can't do it anonymously.

Perhaps close the river , divers in , retrieve bottle. Get it fingerprinted and then scour local businesses for potential CCTV footage to show the act taking place ...

Put a case together , everyone has their day in court , and he gets fined £25

EA Resources are so thin on the ground , you wouldn't believe it. While I agree that littering the river is abhorrent , there isn't a lot to be done. Other things take priority.

perhaps if the EA is as weak as that, then time has come for The People to re-inforce The Law.

I suggest someone on the Thames forum sets up a site called, perhaps, www.boatingpillock.com

and then pics can be posted PDQ to name and shame speeders and bottle chuckers, and rubbish leavers...



The alternative is issue a writ of mandamus against the EA to fulfill their statutory duties. :)
