Hey guys, i'm new to the forum and it looks like a great place to get help. Ok, heres my question, i have a 1982 Chysler Outboard 50HP, something is wrong in the lower unit, the motor will not turn over in neutral or forward, but when i put it in reverese i can manual turn the motor over and the prop will spin in reverse, other than that it is stuck. The motor is not seized as i had the head ripped off and cleaned everything out in there.

My question is i have the 8 screws that hold the whole lower unit to the engine out and it will not come off the motor, as well, i have the bolts out of the 3 sections on the lower unit as well but nothing is coming apart! How do i get this all to disassemble?? HELP!

This is a common problem when taking outboards apart, trying to persuade the power head to let go the shaft. Normally caused by insufficient lubrication on the joint when being assembled. With my 2 hp I ended up using a piece of 2" x 4" wood to persuade it to part. The bottom end where the shaft goes through the water pump to the gearbox will be different from motor to motor, and it is easy to damage the water pump if you get it wrong - take some advice or get the handbook. (dont forget when re-assembling to replace the impellor, and lubricate the rubber on the impellor with the correct stuff)

When you say will not come apart, is it loose but something is stopping dropping fully,
if that is the case it may be the gear linkage, but not sure about the 50hp, on the 25 you undo it part way down the outside of the leg, its a long rod, from what I remember you also adjust the engagement with this rod, you could give bill higham a bell 0161 790 7678 he does all the spares for them and will prob give you advice about your g/box prob.he does have a web site if you do a search for him.

Good luck nick in cheshire.
