Hey Mates, well, the old '82 Chysler finally blew its forward gear. The motor is not seized and the motor turns in reverse and the prop spins i reverse when you do that but does not turn forward. Was wondering, as the outdrive on the motor seems to be in stages, can i remove the bottom stage closest to the prop, looks like i remove 4 bolts and it comes apart. Will anything come apart when i do this?

On most outboards the bottom with the gearbox can be taken off. Look for some means of disengaging the gear selector rod, the driveshaft will probably come away by itself when you separate the pieces.
General advice only I'm afraid as its been a while since I looked at a chrysler.

Good luck

So its alright to remove the bottom part that the prop is also connected to? What do you think would cause the forward gear to go? Is it hard to fix? Expensive? Thanks.

Undo the bolts and take the entire gearbox down. It splits at the level of the cavitation plate. There will be a driveshaft sticking out vertically from the top of the gearbox, this will pull out of the flywheel (it is spline drive)and will be 20inch long or so. There will also be a gearchange rod to disconnect, and cooling water pump (probly rubber pipe just comes out of socket) and exhaust will likely just undo without fasteners

Then dismantle gearbox. Tricky job, manual useful. Normally to reassemble you need to shim it so the manual with data and a shim kit (can you get parts?) are handy. If gearbox is one piece casting you need to pull the gear set and the final drive shaft out by undoing it in the "hole" that appears when you remove the prop. Soem gearboxes are 2 piece and the casing splits. Cant remeber Chrysler

you don't say what type of chrysler it is... power??

if you're very lucky, you'll find someone with a spare gearcasing. you may have to change the shaft tho'... mines a long shaft 30hp.

failing that bill higham is your man, in manchester. 061 790 7678

give me a ring if you want the lower gearcasing, iv'e got a 30 in pieces, minus engine mounts and a few bolts.

regards, steve. 07833 983 074. and i'm in dorset.

Hey guys, well i tried removing the very bottom "stage" but it was connected to the main drive shaft and it would only seperate about 2cms. So i attached everything again. So i can remove everything from just underneath where the motor is?

gear linkage is held together with a split pi thu' a collar. if you look between the gap you'll see it.

if it's an old motor it'll be a bit stiff, but a drop of wd40 and light taps with a hammer will shift it. and i've still got that spare one....
