I've got a cordless drill on board, and I'm fed up with having to replace my screwdriver bits every year. No matter what I do to them, they keep rusting.

Anyone know where I can get some chromed screwdriver bits? Note: I don't mean chrome-vanadium or chrome-molybdenum steel (although this is fine as well), I want the shiny, shiny things. :)

I don't think chrome will help you a monkey's - it'll chip in the toolbox and chip when you use them. Marine fittings are not made of ferrous metals coated in chrome. Buy steel bits in quantity and protect them with grease and chuck them away when they go rusty.

Somebody might sell you stainless bits if you search, but they all wear out and break - they're consumables. Normal bit sizes I buy 24 at a time and chuck them when they're dead. (I buy 3mm twist drills much the same way - they seem to drill pilot holes for all screws, and they break and rust.)

The gold bits from Screwfix are excellent,
I bought a dozen at the start of a building project,
I've now finished it and have yet to wear out the first one.

Goldbits do rust, but not as quickly. You can buy all sorts of fancy ones including diamond coated. I think I have tried them all!

My conclusion is that it's better to by bog-standard steel ones and chuck them when they go duff. I find that the pozidriv ones get knackered by camout with my careless screw driving. I get through pozidriv #2 bits at a furious rate.

The expensive ones don't suffer the same kind of gradual camout wear in my experience - they just break suddenly at some point.
