Time for a new YAPP - and this one is not Seatalk, which is a first. It's not much; just a small backlit text display that repeats GPS information. You get latitude, longitude, SOG and true COG all squeezed into a 2 line display...

Messages received are RMS, GGA and GLL. It works with both the old format of NMEA 183 or new. Connections are just 12V and Ground for power and A/B or Data/Ground for the signal.

It only takes a miserly 6 mA with the backlight turned down low. Almost as parsimonious as me.

Details and full source, schematic and layout is here is anyone wants to do one themselves...

Alternatively, I'll send out just a PCB, a PCB and flashed processor, or a made up one. You will need to figure out a box, although it can be mounted in a cutout.

great idea. Being a bit of a luddite when it coems to electrickery could some one explain if this would work with Yapps gps mouse box (ie can this screen get lat / long, speed, and cog from yapps gps mouse).
Many thanks

Do you mean this?

That device is just a power supply box really for the BR-355 serial GPS mouse. You still need to buy the BR-355 mouse. They cost £23. But yes, they would all work together and you would get lat, long, COG and SOG. If you do an EBay search on BR-355 you will find it for sale for £23...

Thats brilliant. I was going to move my garmin gps to the cockpit as in the cabin i dont use it except for powering the nmea data for the DSC VHF, now i have to think if i need the garmin at all! I could keep the garmin in the cabin and use the reapter in cockpit (in waterproof case). Or move garmin to cockpit and use GPS mouse and yapps magic box to power the DSC part of the VHF. Or get rid of garmin completely and just use yapps repeater in cockpit and the gps mouse with the magic box in the cabin wired to the vhf (which would use a lot less power than the garmin gps and save space in my cockpit and nav station). I also have a hand held gps and gps on my smart phone as back ups.

now just need to sell the garmin to pay for gps mouse, yapps magic boxes, and a couple of waterproof cases. Hmm, or maybe i should get on and do the more important jobs first instead of procastinating!

cheers
