Isn't it the case that strictly speaking the Solent runs from a line between Calshot and Cowes westwards to Hurst Narrows? And that the area east of this, along to Chichester entrance is in fact Spit Head?

I dont really know-or care much either way.

Amongst my sailing friends the Solent is deemed to be the bit between the IOW and England.

Don't think so - the Admiralty chart says "The Solent" down both arms.

Spit Head is a more "modern" area within the Solent and is between Ryde and Gillkicker. It doesn't extend as far as Cowes or Chichester. The Solent was a river that exited between what is now Bembridge and Chichester and turned south out to the middle of what is now the English Channel.

I would think the Solent is more generally accepted to extend east to somewhere around the Portsmouth Harbour limits, a line roughly from Langstone to the Nab.

Not sailed west of Cowes since 1985 on my day skipper course on a Sadler 29, and Chichester harbour was last visited in 1974 on a "decent mobo" (A Weymouth 32)!

Very nice video, and terrific music.

I like the sense of slight tension, familiar to anyone who has sailed with the wind against tide..."more is happening here than just my boat being blown across the sea!"

I'm so glad I'm not alone in sometimes enjoying the relaxed peace and infinitely controllable pace of sailing under genoa alone. Minimal stress.

By the way, at 15:20, that's Hamstead Ledge, not Ramstead!

Faced with sailing up to Cowes against the tide, weren't you tempted to go south round St Catherine's Point, to see the island's lovely steep, wooded south-east side?

Edit: Anybody know what type the trimaran is at 19:45? Very slick.

Modern in relation to the River Solent which is why I put it in inverted commas - the Solent appeared on maps before Spithead did. I would guess the navy probably named it Spithead at some point. The Spithead mutiny was 1797.

My definition of the Solent - Needles to Bem Ledge. Others might say Hurst to the Forts.

Hayling Bay to the east, Christchurch Bay to the west.
