Isn't it the case that strictly speaking the Solent runs from a line between Calshot and Cowes westwards to Hurst Narrows? And that the area east of this, along to Chichester entrance is in fact Spit Head?

Spit Head is a more "modern" area within the Solent
Modern in relation to the River Solent which is why I put it in inverted commas - the Solent appeared on maps before Spithead did. I would guess the navy probably named it Spithead at some point. The Spithead mutiny was 1797.Not that modern, surely - when was the Mutiny At Spithead?
