Having injured a shoulder tendon (swimming!!) I now need to install an anchor winch in my WINDY 22 DC SPORT 6.7 Metre. Does anyone have advice please. I guess I need heavy duty cable. Does the ceiling and cabin wall reveal access for the cable run to the battery. Do I need to change the anchor to make it self parking. Thanks in advance

I don't know the boat in great detail but it's not comon to install windlass arrangements where the screen opens so easily on the bow area so it's unlikly there are any pre arranged components.

there are so many factors associated with a succesful windlass installation ........

1. you need a decent chain locker that the chain can drop into and self stow
2. for full trouble free remote operation you will need chain
3. you will need both a good mounting area for the windlass, including the motor which is below the gypsy etc
4. you may need a new anchor roller arrangement
5 you may need a new anchor

all told, and without full details of your shoulder, I would seriously consider using a lazy jack approach to bring recovery back to the cockpit area to permit you to handle what shouldn't be any significant load more easily. Add a simple lifting system (clip on ring and fender) for open water/deep water recovery which would permit you full recovery with only one hand/arm.

All of these you will certainly need, but I would hold there a mo! Your Windy aint built to cope with the power of a windlass. I know Windys are tough but in raising the anchor, you may damage the prow GRP. You don't have a chain locker for the (definitely needed) chain. You can't use rope to cable. Not sure how you cope with a bad shoulder but you would likely damage the value of your boat with an improper mod.

I'm uncertain about needing all chain. Perhaps 5 or 10 m, yes, but the majority of the warp can be rope on a boat of that length and mass.

In which case you can probably find somewhere for a small manual winch, as used on saily boats. Located almost anywhere, you can arrange some snatch blocks to give a good fair lead from the bow to the winch.

If you make a chain locker it needs to have a drain. My old Sealine 220 had a small elec. winch with a rope windlass on the side. Perhaps a rope only solution would suit you best.

Thank you all so much - Sorry but can you explain" Add a simple lifting system (clip on ring and fender) for open water/deep water recovery which would permit you full recovery with only one hand/arm.[/QUOTE]"

In fact the WINDY does have a substantial anchor locker and today I tested adding 20 metres more of chain and it fits: 8mm The factory have sent me a picture of a winch fitted on the top of the locker, and it seems with 6mm chain: I have tested and 50 m of 8mm is 70kg and 50m of 6mm is 48kg BUT all the work, the installation of support for the anchor box top cover, the additional battery - not vital but wise. The anchor can stay but clearly the attachment on the bow needs to be modified and then there is the worry just how high will the mini mountain of chain be when fed by the winch: These other solutions you mention I shall research thank you. Not sure what was meant by a lazy jack system so will start googling:
