I'm not very technical but I've decided to start doing some of the basic servicing myself now that I've gotten away from Volvo engines with all their electronic gizmos which always frightened me from doing more than checking the dipstick.
My relatively new to me boat has 2 x Yanmar 75HP 4JH3TE engines with around 2,850 each. I need 15W40 oil and I looked on one of the Turkish marine sites and they have Vetus Marine Diesel oil which works out at around €10.50 per liter. On the Turkish equivalent of Amazon they have Castrol 15W40 for around €3 per liter. Do I need to buy more expensive oil?
Similarly with coolant. Another one of the popular marine sites is selling Yanmar coolant at around €6 per liter but the other site is selling Castrol at around €3 per liter and other brands cheaper than that.
All advice welcome and appreciated.

You can be sure that Yanmar do not make oil or coolant, but will rebrand from a supplier. You need to check the small print on your engine manual for the correct spec of oil/coolant and buy that. I would expect Castrol to comply, it is a BP company.

I don't know what Yanmar recommend but the grade of oil should match that.
If bought in 20 litre or 25 litre containers a price of £3 per litre is about what I pay.
£10 a litre is a rip off. There is no such thing as marine engine oil.

Look at your manual for the oil specification - then look at what oil meets it.
E. G - volvo kad engine is 15w40 with a specification of VDS2 or higher.

PM sent.

Hi,

You will need a viscosity of 15w40 in addition to the quality rating API code of your Yanmar engine.

The oil brand does not, as important as these two things.
