In my search for a new boat I asked about Twisters and someone mentioned Hustlers as an alternative. I did a search on the YBW website and it turned up a couple of boats that seemed to fit the description as well as a Hustler SJ32. Has anyone had any experience with one of these? It looks pretty race oriented.

The "SJ" sounds like it's been designed by Stephen Jones who as well as designing race boats designed the Starlight range of performance cruisers. I did a quick google search and found a club handicap system which puts her performance in the same league as a Scanmar 33 or a Sigma 33. She'll have a totally different set of sailing characteristics to the Twister, which will be good or bad, depending on what you're looking for. If you're after something similar to the Twister look elsewhere. There is a design called the Hustler 30, without the "SJ", which you might want to look at.

The earlier Hustlers - 25.5, 30 and 35 - were Holman and Pye designs, i.e. from the same stable as the Twister, but quite a different shape being fin and skeg boats with a very "IOR" hull form. Definitely intended as offshore racers.

There is a very nice big Twister called a Rustler 31, ancestor of the 36 but only a very distant relative of the 42. A close relative, and an exceptionally pretty boat, is the Northney 34; basically a glass North Sea 24 (wooden ancestor of the Rustler 31) with a counter; some 30 odd were built then the mould was lost in a fire.

There are a couple of Hustler 30's for sale and they seem pretty good value, unfortunately one's in the West Country and the other's up North. Seems to far to travel from Sussex just to check a design out.

What goes around, comes around....

... The Rustler 36 is a Holman and Pye design, the 42 was designed by.... Steven Jones (although definitely "in the style of....")
