The next bit of boaty kit I've decided I can't live without is an outboard for the tender. It's a tiny 2.3m inflatable affair with a manufacturers maximum recommended hp of 5.

The last outboarded boat I had came factory/dealer mated with it's engine. Is it a fairly simple choosing operation or is there a dark science fools like I need to be wary of? I've decided that having a pretty flat bottom a standard length shaft will suffice (or is it a bit more technical than this?). Yamaha produce an engine they call the F2.5A which to seems the bill.

Thanks for any replies.

Most little outboards are 'short shaft' which is what you need
Unfortunately because of 'emissions' all new outboards of the smaller size are now 4 strokes.
Which are heavier and no better performers than their two stroke equivalents.
Don't be put off if you can find a newish or servicable seconhand two stroke.
As you put it.
It is a tiny affair.
The Yam will do as good as anything.
I have a 2hp Yam two stroke, old but good
Very light
I have used it with various dinghys
Up to 3 m, some with inflatble keels.
You need the smallest lightest eng you can lay your hands on I reckon
