Did any one read this?
Certainly there are instances reported where commercial vessels have failed to meet their colreg obligations, but what still surprises me is that small leisure vessels, power and sail, seem prepared to "take on" large commercial vessels, being the stand on vessel. I m not talking about "meeting in the doorway", which in my experience seems much more likely an incident in fast powerboats.I m saying that at an early stage, deciding what to do.
My philosophy is just the keep out of their damn way, if only because I want to clear their wash by as much as possible. Am I in the minority?

Agree with you. I've always operated on a 'might is right' basis when it comes to dicing with large commercial ships and ferries whatever the Col Regs say. You have to make your intentions clear though

Yes I read it. Found some of the stories interesting and I agree your comments. The guys fishing at anchor with rods, and displaying (one guesses) neither a ball nor a basket while expecting a tug towing a ship to get out of the way was remarkable. The tug was clearly stand on, but the fishermen thought they were, and you can see how that can happen

Some of the stories were namby pamby elf n safety. Like the one on the front page where bloke jumped (1m or so?) from his gunwhale onto his deck when boarding his boat, rahter than lowering himself carefully, and sprained his leg. Big deal...!

It was about the most interesting thing in the magazine according to my husband.

I had a quick scan and thought the bit about the guys fishing was unreal.

The elf n safety one sharply reminded me that I really must stop trying to fend of with my feet or arms (yes, even after 20 odd years of boating - it still catches me out on occassion - despite strict instrutions from the skipper /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif)

The thought of crushing my leg between a 20 ton boat and the dock is something that I should think about more often /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Nope, every woman must do her duty when it comes to avoiding an embarassing crunch, a red face for her hubby and an expensive grp repair. I've trained my SWMBO to lay her body on the line to save the boat. It's all about priorities

Yes, only mine came with PBO so had a lot more about yachties in it. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Seriously, I had to read the report by the angler a couple of times. Only then did I realise that he really was that oblivious to what was going on and what he should do. He actually thought he was the "victim". Frightening /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Yes, I should have said that ours came with PBO and not MBYl
