When the Americas Cup finally comes round will our friends north of the border choose to support whoever we are sailing against just like they do in football matches?

Simply the 'Auld Alliance' laddie. Perhaps a lasting international partnership is not a concept that is readily understood by your nation but you have made good attempts in the past, they just don't seem to last really - pity, as I saw real potential in the 'special' relationship that Margaret Hilda forged with Ronnie. All ended in tears though - no doubt Tony and George Jnr will go the same way.

There's also a serious side to the question. As a youth in Scotland, nationalism (as opposed to pride in ones origin) was really the domain of the lunatic fringe and the national rivalry was in the most part good natured with most Scots judging people on their merits. Scotland has much less class awareness than England and no tolerance for the bumptious twat.

However in recent years there has been a massive increase in nationalism which manifests itself nastily in bigotry.I believe the prime cause of this was the Thatcher years when Scotland was treated really shabbily in comparison to the South of England and many people felt justly aggrieved.

I fail to see how we can really differentiate between the English & Scottish or the the English & the Welsh or the English & the Irish as most English families have at least one Grandparent belonging to at least one of these nations.

I shall of course support England as my daughters will refuse to sail with me if I do'nt! (I must confess I cheered every goal when England beat Germany).

However I do wish that when WE compete in the international arena that WE do it as a British team .. yes ... even for football!

"Auld alliance"!!!! I would not normally do this but, what a load of horseshit! Since when did the french actually support the Scots? Absolute shite! Anybody who drives round with ecosse on his transom car wants a stick stuck up there bum! Just like the French have been doing for centuries! Get wise Claymore, I know you are better than this! I for one will be supporting England in the world cup, they need all the help they can get! tee hee, and as for sailing, we support sailers from this country, are there no Scots or Welsh or Irish in the crew/team, what a load of old bilge, stoppit or I'll report you all to the race relations board, mind you can't expect much more I suppose!

I don't have time to read the other posts here as I've got to see a boat about a trip to Cherbourg. The Americas Cup is a British entry isn't it as opposed to an English entry ? What't the problem ? We'll all be supporting the British entry - at least I hope we will. Was this post a wind up ? Mind you the football is another matter. I'll be watching the Engalnd - Sweden gane from a bar in Cherbourg. Don't ask me who I'll be supporting - I've still not decided. Fair winds for the weekend all.
