I have inherited a 2Kw genset. suitcase and red.

Won't start, so stripped it down and found a small unit which seems to have a feed from petrol tank and also a return to it and a rubber tube that dissapears behind, presumably into the carb.

Anyone know what it is and what it does?

Not a fuel pump by any chance? On outboards these sometimes work by a hose to the crankcase giving alternating pressure and vacuum to work the pump diaphragm back and forth - it’s an ingenious mechanism but not obvious and results in a hose whose function is hard to guess from first principles.

This might sound daft, but a friend of mine inherited a non-working genset of a similar size from a diving company. All he did was to put oil in it, thus overcoming the automatic shutdown system, and it ran at the 1st time of asking.

Fuel pump it is, connection to crankcase was disconnected.
Many thanks for your help, just find the connections and put it back together.
