Chine Walking

Oy! No chine walking possible with S28's /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Thanks for all of your responses - especially S28 & oldgit. It makes more sense now & next time it happens (as no doubt it will) I should be less panicked by the situation. For what it's worth, when it did happen yesterday my initial, i.e. instinctive, response was to throttle back, if only to give myself an extra second or two reaction time in case things had gone seriously pear shaped.

L Capitano's Doral doesn't actually chine walk severly but at one point due to the wave pattern and wind condition, She did lean to Port for a Mo.

Yes, but I was too polite to point it out /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif. Please remember he had a major shock off Puffin yesterday & I assume that recovery is slower than us youngsters might have expected.

Lighter rig means the hull is riding just that bit higher in the water at speed. So less of the "V" remains in the water to provide stability.

Maybe you have some mileage with that but I would imagine the difference is marginal. I would suggest more of an 'operator error' due to lack of correct trimming an/or poor helming. I had a Rinker Fiesta V260 some years back and that chine walked like mad unless you trimmed it out. It used to flop from side to side....but once trimmed it was fine.

Oy, you can't drop clues like that without telling us the story. What happened off Puffin then? Did he actually catch a fish (oh no, that's what would give the major a heart attack) did he discover he had lost his fags - or did he suddenly remember his pint was nicked the other day? Or did you remind him it would be his round when you got back?

Doh! Edit; I have now read the post 2 down where you nearly lost his anti-freeze in the 'Oggin

I used to get chine walking years ago on my old fletcher 16 with 80 horse merc on the back , when it was flat calm behind hurst castle we would try to get max speed by trimming engine right out , but to much made boat hop from side to side . used to make us laugh like drains but girls didnt like it much . /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I believe semi-displacement boats can suffer from it at speed when the keel starts to lift the boat a bit, at which point the boat flops side to side. I think there was a test on a 60' semi-displacement boat (MBM or MBY a few years ago) which was commented as almost dangerous in its severity.

Yes, I can understand that scenario.

However a 60ft semi wont have chines as severe or maybe I should say pronounced as a full planing jobbie.

A semi , at speed as you comment.
Virtually planing in some cases.
The Corvette 32 when fitted with twin 350's I think it was.
No personal exprience of that hull with those engines, only 250's.

But reports were that the Hull got rather hairy with all that power.

What I,m trying to say in a round about sort of way!
Is-- I,m deffo no hull expert or designer or owt like that.
But I have experienced semis flopping.
OOPS! that doesn't sound very good either!

Anyway-- when they go fast(semis) ie almost planing they do tilt.
My mate had an Aquaster 27 about 1991 vintage.
Big motor in Her.
When 'clean' at the beginning of the Season She would make 19kts but felt quite twitchy at that speed.
