Does anyone know if it's true that by putting chilli powder in your antifouling, you keep a cleaner hull. I've heard this from a few people and seem to think it was mentioned in PBO or Sailing Today earlier this year?

If it is true, how much should I add to a 5 litre tin ?

Thanks.

The chilli powder has to be as pure as possible for maximum effect, but appears to work from all reports on liveaboard forums.

it might keep barnacles away, but you end up with groups of lads licking your boat at throwing out time

Don't matter how it works, as long as it works. I suppose the licking noises might keep you at wake at night though.

Last April I thought that it was a "fools" Day joke, but the more that I thought about it ,realised that this was serious stuff. 2.5 ltr of antifouling was dosed with ASDA`s velly hot chilli powder (£2.40) and applied. Conclusions 1. it worked 2. I will do it again.
For most of my sailing life I have been plagued with barnicles, some years very badly. After applying in May the only places that have been affected are those that were not antifouled rudder pintle (lower) log, and engine intake, this Year they did not appear until late (After June). Compared to the last 20 years I would call this additive a success.

Tip, before mixing, wet the entire dose with thinners before dumping into the main body, as the Chilli does not wet out very well, a mistake that I made, ignor the frivoulouse comments, usually from people who have never tried it.

The Only problem that I have experienced is the marine life popping up to asked when the curry van is coming!!!!!

Currently Lagos, Algarve for the winter

I tried it this year..

and being a nerdy scientist I left 4 control patches at different points on the hull where the antifoul alone was applied.

I'm leaving the boat in the marina for this winter, so that should be a test.

I'll report back next spring.

(If I remember)

(Altzheimers is just a memory now)

!32 grams I think, anyway I tipped the whole container in, also it was hard antifouling so I cannot comment on any other type. Give it a go, nothing to lose and it did not shange the colour to any degree.
