Anybody tried chili powder in the antifouling, I have heard that its all the rage down under. (the south seas, not down under the boat)

Now there isnt any anti in the antifouling, I figure you could put anything nasty in it and it would work better.

Chili is very hot, and very cheap (in bulk from the chinese wholesale supermarket.) But how much to put in?

We aqre going to do one side of the boat with, and one side withoout. No No if it works we will be going in circles. We will do the whole boat, and leave patches here and there without. Maybe we will try patches with different concentrations.

Maybe we could test other nasty things besides chili, any ideas?

At the end of last season, there was relatively little growth, amazing since the antifouling had done two seasons, and all winter inbetween dried out. But that was because it was our last stash of old illegal stuff. Interestingly there was prolific growth on the bits where the surveyor had scraped it off and we had touched up with the new rubbish.

We will put up photos of the results come October.

last year We treated a sheet of grp with a material used to coat the back of pickups. We left it nine months hanging in the martina and when we removed it we gave it a wipe and it was like new but I haven't the guts to try it on my boat. but I think that it may be an interesting outcome /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hi,

I have heard sea shells also dont grow barnacle on it and some experiments have been made with ground shells.

What is that stuff called that gets put on a pick up please?

Last season mixed three bottles of Tabasco extra hot sauce in with the cheapest XM anti foul, much to the amusment and derision of the old salts at the yacht club. You should have seen their faces at the lift out. My trapper came out totally clean of any type of growth, just a bit of Thames slime around the waterline. I use black anti foul, so the tabasco did not have any effect on the colour. try it and see. Good luck.

Sounds good !

Doe's marine low life have tastebuds though ?

No, not racing crews but weeds and things.

Interesting that human culinary offerings may have sailing applications. I reckon dried on cornflakes could make a fantastic glue for boats. In our bedsit days it was easier sometimes to throw the bowl and get a new one.

I'll tell you at the end of the season. 1.5 bottle of chilli powder per 2.5l tin of Flag a/f.

Holding thumbs.

At least if it does not work the barnacles will taste better with my beer

Cheers

We used to use cannabis resin mixed into the a/f when I lived in SA it worked better than chili powder.
Nothing would stick to it for long. The barnacles fell off after a few hours after laughing too much and forgetting to hold on. Any other microbial life ate itself to death and fell off.
Maybe if you mixed chilli power into the solution you would have a secret wepon. I will give it a try if I remember.

Winfried.

The product is a self healing coating called Speedliner. Several large boats have been treated with this stuff, they tell me with great success but as I said earlier I haven't the guts to try it, but I firmly believe that it is sitting waiting to be discovered.
www.speedliner.com - have a look.

I used Very Hot Cilli powder, ASDAs biggest bottle into 2lte tin of hard antifouling and it reduced the passengers to ten percent of what I usually get, going to scrape off and not reapply for this year. But I am going to experiment with red oxide primer and powder and various mixes to the areas that have been affected, take some befor and after pics and see what happens. To those who make snide remarks I suggest that you try it before ridiculing those who are prepared to have a go.
