Are there any swmbo’s around this evening?

I have put together a sailing video featuring Trina but she won’t see it until next week, does it have girl appeal?

For the other 99% of Scuttlebutt, if you are interested in the performance of the latest hi-def consumer camcorders the 1st link will stream 5 minutes of sailing footage taken from a Canon HV20.

Encoded for the Windows media player 9 and above.

208Mb DVD quality (5-10 minutes before it starts playing).

Anyhow I won't have time to monitor usage over the next few days, so before the download bandwidth surcharge begins to rival a night in a Solent marina I will be taking the files offline in the next 30 minutes.

The HV20 is my first camcorder and a week ago I had no experience of video editing. With the entry level packages, like ULead and Pinnacle, getting basic video sequenced takes an evening from initial download and trial fumbling with the controls.

En-route I tried Adobe Elements before settling on Sony's Vegas. Vegas has a steeper learning curve but after a week I'd say it is worth the effort and has some sophisticated scene transitions such as the page tear/scroll that I used twice. 20 years ago TV companies used to buy £20,000 Quantel boxes to do much the same, now such effects cost £50.

I am gobsmacked by the quality of the camera's output, given a steady mount and bright scene the reproduction on TV looks near broadcast quality. The footage you saw represents my first 2 hours with the camera on water and prior to that I had just done a few test shots in the garden.

All the major video packages can be downloaded for a 1 month trial.
