Chichester to Brighton

Never understood the attraction of Brighton Marina .... where do you go from there for a day sail ? apart from out and in again.

Brighton - I like actually - it was my teanage stomping ground - dare I say it with my Lambretta !!!!

I'm seriously considering taking a berth in Brighton this season - there are a few short hop locations - Shoreham, Newhaven. Also a range of destinations for the weekend - with more emphasis on sailing rather than just pottering from one pub to another.

On top of that there is more to do "shoreside" in Brighton than most other Marina locations on the south coast, and it is much closer to home in London, making day trips more feasible.

The new issue of Sailing Today (through my letterbox yesterday) has a Gull's Eye view and report on Brighton.

Leaving Gosport in no wind last May we motored with the tide and went straight past Brighton to Eastbourne (Sovereign Yacht Harbour) in one go. Over 7 knots most of time thanks to the tide.

Lots going on in Brighton at the moment, mostly resurfacing the pontoons by the fishing boats, otherwise, apart from lots of topside repair work from the last 2 high winds, they are doing some strange things just outside the marina! Plenty of vacant berths as the boat yard is full.

Yep .... First was a TV175 series 2 .... then a GT200 bored out to 228 - which I sold on later a guy who put it on the race track ... I NEVER had a Tigers tail on an aerial though ...

Used to go all over on those ... loads of us in a group. Southend, Brighton, Croydon, Littlehampton, Bournemouth ...

Have you seen the prices for restored Lambo's now ?? Unbelievable ... same GT200 like mine (I paid about £80 for it early 70's ...) now over £3000 ....

I moved last year from Brighton to Newhaven - I like the more boaty feel of Newhaven and its better entrance, but its mostly because the boatyards are cheaper and my regular day sail is to .... Brighton for Saturday night.

Like it ... has a cheaky sense of humour about it !! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I have to say that my trip to Brighton was helping new owner of my Snap 23 to get it from Solent to there. I was definitely not impressed by the approach and lack of advise from Brighton staff ... and second the berth they gave him. Only redeeming factor was when wife arrived with car to take me home .. we did the shopping before leaving.

I see the (possible) move to Brighton as dipping my toe in the water (or should that be keel). In the longer term there are some nice "boaty" locations nearby - such as Shoreham or Newhaven - that I think I will prefer.

My big concern is what it is really like getting into Brighton in a SW gale. The great thing about the Solent is that is it always easy to enter via the ports in any weather conditions

Have you ever been to Shoreham?!!!!!!!!!!!

No - is it really that bad?

I have some friends who speak highly of it /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I think it is the Shell Channel pilot that say of Shoreham something like "a commercial port that offers little to the cruising yachtsman", .

You have a power station, timber imports, fuel depot. There is a good yacht club a short distance from the marina. I dont know if the town has anything of benifit, there is a new development at the old Ropetackle walk.

Years ago we did what was advertised as a 'heavy weather' course from Brighton. 'Luckily' the weather was quite rough, getting out was ok [just], coming back a couple of hours later was horrendous, by the time we'd avoided the silted up bit our skipper went extremely pale as we were literally inches from piling into the wall on top of a huge swell. I'd think more than twice about being based there, Chichester Bar in poor conditions was infinitely 'better'.
