Wow, as a previous customer (One night) I have just go an offer I am struggeling to resist.... (we have talked about moving the boat somewhere else as a change anyway).

12 Month berthing for a mere 5x of my current cost.

loads of other stuff as well.... but what is really tempting must be the offer of both fuel and electricity at cost !!!!!

Any Chichester berth holders down there, who are enjoying these benefits and who can give an indication of the current 'cost' to bring fuel and electricity to the marina?

Hi from "E" Pontoon. Last time I filled with fuel was probably about November and it was about 43ppl. Electricity was 11p + Vat per unit, although I think there's some noise about increasing it

Another Hi from "E" Pontoon ... although only temporary!! I can't recall the £/L at the last fill, but It was around the 50ppl or below ... at £23 to fill up I'm not that bothered - I filled our main tank which must have taken about 25L and filled an empty 25L can ...

Dunno about elec - haven't paid for any yet ...

I doubt the savings will be worth 4x your current costs though!

Chi is a great base, especially if you spend a lot of time on board as we do.

The "new" Spinnaker pub is much improved, cheapish (and very good) food, and a good gathering of boaters most nights. Not too good for the liver though....

We filled last November at 48p/litre, though the leccy seems quite expensive. 'Cos we live 130 miles away, we leave two 100w heater tubes in the engine room on permanantly, and a 2kw heater on low and on a timer in the cabin. Monthly bills this winter are around £60/70, though we do spend a lot of time on board, so the hot water and battery charger is also on much of the time. It's all metred so can't really argue.

All in all, a great place to be, and for our 14 metre berth, it works out around £2500 cheaper than the Hamble marinas, though you don't have the instant access to the Solent.

Hi fron D pontoon,

Chi is a great place fuel and electric as already been described. Marina staff are very nice.

BUT it's too far from the sea and it has a lock which gets very busy. Takes about 45 mins to get out to sea. Although I love it there I am getting a bit fed up with the arduous task of weaving between about 500 various sailing boats between there and the sea.

They don't really understand its hard to steer a mobo below 6 kts, and they mostly travel at around 5 kts, you cant really do much more then 7 kts or you are a monster for creating wash and passing at only 1 kt advantage with so much traffic gets to be hard work after the first 10 mins.

Will I leave? I don't know, probably not. Nowhere else to go at that price.

Greetings from F pontoon - shortly moving to E !

I agree with all the previous comments. Last time I looked, diesel had risen to about 55p/litre - still good value.
It's true that it can be a pain getting out to sea (especially in school hols when all the sailing schools are out en-masse), and it does take the thick end of an hour. But, against that it is incredibly pretty, and if the weather is a bit iffy, one can stay within the shelter of the harbour and still enjoy a day out.
One last thing that seems much worst at Chichester than elsewhere is the dreaded worm that loves attaching itself to anything metal (GRP largely unaffected) below the waterline. We had to have the outdrives cleaned off mid way through last season the build up was so bad.
Hope this is useful!

Yes, the worm.....
Some years worse than others, last year seemed particularly bad.
Scrubbed off at the excellent Cowes Sea Lift in August and t'was back with a avengence within a few months.
Dunno if this was the cause of my busted coupling bolts but my neighbour with v. similar boat had exact same problem.
Oh, and forget lift and storage ashore at this time of year unless you book about 6 months in advance. I was told earliest they could accomodate me was mid April /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
So have come around to Sparkes
Other than that, best marina in solent IMHO for all round appeal, as stated by others.

hi i am on k pontoon, and have been at the marina for 5 years. i love chichester marina. lush green countryside, loads of wildlife, no noise or traffic, friendly staff, friendly berthholders, good toilets and showers, good on site services, and above all a great atmosphere. yes the lock can be an issue, but if you pick your time and work the tide, your laughing. i personally have no issue with the 45 minute trek to/from the harbour entrance, as the sceneary is beautiful. all this for approx 40% less of the cost of a hamble berth!

where are you up in scotland? i stayed for a while in largs, that also was a beautiful marina.

hope you enjoyed chichester!

I can concur. 54p per litre last weekend. I personally think Chichester marina and the harbour are one of the best in the Solent. Yes it's sometimes a pain poodling along at 6 knots for 45 mins to get to open water but the beauty of the place makes up for that. We rarely have a problem with the lock, maybe once or twice a year. You just have to work it in your favour... like for instance leave the marina Friday night and moor at either the itchenor pontoons or pick up a buoy, come back on Sunday during freeflow. Works for us and can't imagine mooring anywhere else.

Similar thoughts from us on C pontoon.

Timing is all with the lock. Needs a little advance planning to avoid too much queuing on a sunny Sunday in August.

We looked at a few other places last year but ended up thinking we were pretty happy where we are.

Thanks guys!!! probably won't move this year, but just wanted to know the state of play down there.. I enjoyed the stay in Chichester Marina and the facilities were very nice indeed for our short period of time... restaurant was a bit OTT for what we needed then (putting boat together after transport from SOF), but believe changes have been made there... and we did not enjoy the fuel rebate wehn we visited as we were only topping her up (short 1200 L).... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

We're currently on the NE coast, but have cruised large parts of the West Coast... still have Orkneys and Shetland to do before we move .. so that may be the plan this year...

there is some history to the resuaurant at chichester called the spinnicker (sorry for bad spelling)! widely documented on here. used to be owned by conrad and his wife. basically the place was miserable due largely to his attitude and behaviour towards customers.

anyway, conrad and wife left for spain, interestingly at a similar time and to a similar place as the lovely mr brain peters went (but i wont go into that now!)

so the restaurant in chichester marina is now owned by an indian chap who also owns a nice indian restaurant in chichester town. i think things have improved. they do brekfast lunch and dinner and teas coffees cakes etc. prices a little high but not too bad, and after all, it is chichester!

good luck with your plans and your cruising! hope to see you in chichester one day.

I thought Conrad went to Spain for a healthier life because he is ill? Nothing to do with Peters.

[/ QUOTE ]

Quite correct, in fact Peters Group owe him money!!

I saw Conrad and Jill a couple of weeks ago - we were testing in Spain and they came up to the circuit. They stayed at the team hotel that night, and I had dinner with them.

They both look well, though Conrad does have his health problems, and they wished to be remembered to all at Chi Marina.

yes i also heard that but was not sure how confidential that was? sorry to jump on the anti conrad bandwaggon but unfortunately i had so many bad experiences there and personally know of many others also who had bad experiences there. at the end of the day, whatever he did during his time at chi, i dont wish ill health on anybody and i hope that he lives the rest of his days as comfortable as is possible.

Oh , I agree with you re his attitude towards customers. That being the reason I wouldn't go there. It's a much more social place now and very busy. I wonder why.....

I believe the yacht club a waiving their joining fee till the end of march so you only need to pay the yearly membership. Will save about £300 from normal joining fees.
