Chichester Marina lock out of action

Moonshining,

very unusual, I've not known it as an occasional visitor since 1978, but it was good of you to mention.

Galadriel has a point, sailing / boat owning is all about freedom; I get a little worried when bottled up in a locked marina and having to beg on the radio to be allowed out !

A friend had to call in at Northney after an engine problem and they offered him a very good deal so he is staying there a little while.

It has reasonable facilities loo and shower wise, generally free to come and go apart from LWS depending on boat but is a bit lacking in character, the walk over the bridge to 2 nice old pubs ( & Langstone SC when open Wednsday evenings, Saturday lunch / eve & Sundays to lunchtime ) may make up for that.

Chichester Marina is a nice spot if one walks along the old canal but it's a fair walk to what used to be a nice old pub, now some sort of Chinese sacriledge !

I'd go for Emsworth Marina every time, tidally restrticted though it is, with ' It's a knockout ' dodgy wobbly narrow pontoons and basic but decent facilites;it's a pity they aren't more clued up about visiting boats.

With Emsworth it's always pot luck including whether one gets a response on the VHF or phone at a weekend - if one does get in there's a lovely little town on one's doorstep with facilities ranging from every type of restaurant & takeaway, morning cafe and bank point / hardware store / chandlery going.

No connection to Emsworth Marina or any others mentioned.

I had nine years at Chichester Marina and liked it very much. But, in the end, having to plan around convenient times to use the lock tipped the scale in favour of moving away.

Depending on your boat length, there's a big difference in the cost between Northney and Chichester marinas. Northney showed no interest in negotiating a couple of years ago when I asked and that, ultimately, is why I'm now in Chichester! Glad the lock's fixed!

They just need to dredge the approach channel, 24hr access is a bit questionable these days for more than 1m draft!

Admittedly if it is a big spring the water can be a bit thin, but we went in on Sunday 9th June around 18.00 (LW Springs) with a 1.6 meter draft without a problem. balance that against having to queue () to get in the lock on a busy Sunday afternoon, there is just no contest. Of course if you like boating equivalents of a massive car park, carry on and enjoy.

Galadriel,

I have several very good stainless fabrications by Chris at his works by Chi Basin ( C & J Marine at the end towards CYC, no connection just very good ) ; when I was wandering around his lovely workshop I couldn't help noticing a large pile of mangled stainless pulpit rails, all a result of berks in gin palaces jostling to get into the lock !

Poor show from Premier, things like this happen but they should text/email berth holders to let them know what is happening so that they don't waste a days holiday.

To be fair to them, they did send out an email and another later when fixed, just not in time for me to have avoided a 50 mile round trip and a wasted day off.
With the building work going on and the heat meaning doors and windows needing to be open just hanging around on the boat for the day wasn't doable either.
