SWMBO and I want to go to Poole from Chichester in August (weather permitting) and did think we would go via Lymington and do it over two days.

But looking at my Almanac tonight, I was thinking of going by the Nab and round the bottom or the IOW.

I've not been south of the Island before so should go this way at some stage but is this a good route to take? Looks a bit further this way but might be nice to avoid the ferries etc. for a change?

Cheers

Ricky

I was with Solitaire of this parish on passage from Dartmouth to Chichester a couple of years ago and suggested doing the very same (only going t'other way). He said, "why would you want to do that?" and gave me a Paddington Bear type of hard stare. We left it at that and went via Hurst. :D

It's fine, and some lovely scenery. Don't go too close in, there are loads of lobster pots with floating lines!!

LOL, however all we'd seen was sea, was nice to to see a bit of land for a change! If I was on a planning boat I'd go via St Cats from Chi to Poole. Also if I recall, it had been fairly lumpy on the run up and if the wind is S SW it can get a bit boisterous round that South side.

Distance wise there is not a great difference.

We've been round the south side from Chi and second Solitaire. Can be a bit boisterous around St Cats so avoid punching the tide if possible, and def any wind against tide, but you're quite right it's not really any different distance wise to Poole, and indeed if the Solent is busy it's considerably less hassle and maybe shorter if you account for dodging yachties :D Nice scenery too and you can anchor for lunch in Freshwater Bay.

Thanks for the answers peeps.

Looks like it might be worth it if the weather is nice like it is today, shame to be stuck in the office today. :(

It's a fairly boring journey and fairly barren on that side of the island. A few nice secluded beaches which I've always fancied mooring off for the night, wind dependant but have never got round to it.

Agree with you, St Catharine's lighthouse is about the only thing of interest. I have anchored up in Freashwater Bay a few times and, as you say, with wind in the right direction it can be like being in the med - the water is actually crystal clear.
