Hi

I'm going to be relocating to Chi (from Brighton) imminently and wondered if anyone could give me some pointers on good places to go and explore and just generally whet my appetite for the move more! :)

Also - how's the fishing round that way?

Moving to Chi the world (Solent) becomes your oyster . Too many placed to list but your first stop will be East Head....

ps If you're moving to Chi marina give us a shout when your there and come aboard for a 'coffee'

mackerel fishing is good around the forts.

If the sea is good, Priory Bay,Bembridge and Whitecliff Bay, all on IOW.
Osborne Bay is a popular anchorage.Cowes is worth a visit, but I have never understood the attraction of Yarmouth, possibly bcz I have never managed to eat any food served there...
In the harbour, watch those depths when the tide goes out. You might be 300metres off land and in knee height water !

At low water stick between the buoys and you will be fine - at high water you can often pass shoreside of the buoys - I quite often do with a 1.5m keel ....

yep sure.. I was merely pointing out to a stranger to the area that distance from land might be a bit more deceptive re depth than Brighton !

You dont have a red hull fireball, do you?

Well, I've managed to catch the grand total of nought this year. In fact spent a couple of hours spinning on Sunday eve, and another hour or so on Monday morning, and zilch, yet again. And this is after switching to using a Dexter Wedge which is supposed to be the D.B.s.....apparently.

Are you trying to upset me? Anchored on Sunday night at Itchenor Reach, and on Monday am, jumped in the tender with fishing rod etc. and went to East Head and back, and all I caught were great clumps of weed!

Emsworth is a lovely spot, the marina berths are VERY narrow and the finger pontoons very wobbly if there isn't a boat tied the other side, but it's a great place with a short pleasant walk beside the millpond into town; the BlueBell pub on the way down from the town square towards the harbour ( not marina ) is best pub.

Emsworth Marina 01243 377727 - Tidal access, there's an accurate tide guage by the sill; if in doubt bino's are handy.

Restaurants & pubs of just about every type inc' eye-watering.

If not the marina there's a pot-luck pontoon on the port side on the way down, they've moved it since I was there so check depth at LW.

Northney Marina is a bit soul-less, all the facilities & normal not comedy berths, a shortish walk across Hayling bridge to 2 good old pubs serving food.

You'll enjoy Chichester, just don't mix a Southerly breeze of more than F5 to start with against the ebb at the entrance; normally no bother at all.

I've caught 4 in one fishing trip...... I was in Spain at the time though

i wont mention the grey mullet we caught on bread last week then at the visitors ponton at itchenor and the small sea bream at the entrance to the bosham reach.
my late husband loved sea fishing but didnt catch much but since i bought the boat and a decent outboard i took up the hobby and seem to do pretty well

We were at Northney for a season and agree its very quiet but excellent MDL facilities on site. As has been said, be careful at LW and stick to the buoyed line it gets very shallow at Springs particularly just as you go into Northney. There is a hotel next door The Langston that is very nice and includes a restaurant. The Ship across the bridge (as said by Seajet) is good for food too. You can even moor on the wall at the Ship at HW but have a look from land! at LW first before venturing as there are some hazzards. If you decide to moor at Ems or Northney or on a buoy, there are lots of places to visit on your tender, we just studdied a chart and set off (with plenty of tender fuel!).

I don't know Brighton but if you are not used to sailing dinghies zooming everywhere at all angles happy to travel within 3ft of you at odds to all the traffic, then that is something you will get used to in Chi Harbour - August is a Peak time.

But it is a very nice place to be and has great access to the IOW and Solent - just mind the sub barrier!

Too true; the 'Dolphin' marker to the gap half way along the sub barrier looks like an 'inverted 'U' and is on the bee-line from Chichester West Pole beacon to say Cowes, around 090 / 270 magnetic.

The real bother is that some prat has liberally dispensed pot marker buoys all along this direct path !

Small dark blue plastic cans, I suspect supermarket meths or similar; enough of a pain to sailing types, but I'd think a real worry for motor boats; it would serve the culprit right if he were to find his markers severed...

How is the lobster pot poll / campaign going ? Something close to my heart, imagine any boat, sail or power, tethered by the stern in Portland Race inshore passage !!!
