Morning all,

I don't have access to charts etc this week and am planning a few days in the channel islands soon.

So a question to all you nav type people out there.

What is the absolute latest i can leave Cherbourg and still get to SPP before the tide becomes nasty in the little Russel.

I normally leave Cherbourg at HW dover-3 but this gives me a problem.

The boat lives in Cherborg. I will be getting the vomit comet from Portsmouth which is due to arrive at 11am GMT..now Dover HW is 14:50 GMT.

So that give me an hour to get on my way. But the ferry had one engine down last weekend so is running slower than normal.

It's looking a bit tight to get the tide but i welcome your thoughts.

The boat is a Sadler 34 and can cruise at 6 knots.

I have no tide tables with me so can't judge if HW D -3 is the best time to leave.

I would plan to be at the top of the Alderney Race as the tide turns south ... and this is the important bit ... using the west going eddy that seems to run most of the time close inshore from Cherbourg to The Cap.

I have on occasion arrived too early at the Alderney race.
Not all is lost. You can go inside the lighthouse and avoid the foul tide.

The ideal tide for the trip is DVR -1 to DVR +5

It's 43nm so with the tide with you, you should easily manage it in 6 hours
Leave by DVR -1

Do you? On the charts it looks as if the tide inside turns at the same time as outside .. hypothetical for me .. I've no intention of getting anywhere near ;-)

When hugging the shore to getr the counter eddie how close please? Never been close to Cap Hague lighthouse how big is the gap between lighthouse and shore? Many isolated rocks?

Stay very close to the lighthouse. Short underarm stone throw. There are charted rocks but as it will be close to high you will have loads of depth underneath. This route is marked on French charts. Once you've done it it's no big deal. Best only done in calm conditions first time.
