We are based in Southampton and next year are thinking of relocating our boat to cherbourg and using the marina saving to commute ( UK 3k.. france 900 quid.. marina fees ) has anyone go any views on this maybe good or bad idea???
 
Moved mine to Calais 2 years ago, £500 a year all in with elec and water. Block book the ferry about £40 return with the car and 5 people. Sometimes use the tunnel which is quicker. Best run just over 3 hours from Oxford to sitting on the boat /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
Go for it if you can get a berth.
 
hi, spentmost of last winter in cherbourg as liveabord, i liked it very much. cheap cost of living, nice restaurants, beer is a liitle expensive, wine in restaurants is extortionate.
marina is good, friendly and helpful. showers were good but 1.5 E a shot, real bad part for me was lack of a decent bog with seat....most were arabic type crouchers.
if you move there get right in close to the inner end of the piers as the wind howls thro. damage can be done.
I believe ferries can be expensive, we did a few trips home and used the Le havre ferry but its a long drive round.
If ever i moved back up north i would certainly consider Cherbourg.

I emailed them earlier this year, enquired about a berth and they said they had no space, but I suspect that is also a function of length. Worth a shot though...
 
carantan always seems a long way up the river for me at HW. It's okay if you don't go anywhere. I'm not a fan of Cherb either, i've changed my view over the last year or so after being approched many a time on the pontoon from ilegals wanting a lift back to the uk. and i believe there quite often is a bit of trouble in town. My favorite for an all tide marina would be a bit further south at St Quay and would give you a better cruising ground, we were temped a few years ago.
 
I would agree its a long way but very cheap and well worth it IMHO for the resturants alone.
Helps if you are shallow draught or lifting keel. Local fisher boats sometimes drop you in the mud from their wakes as they go past at neaps and the channel tends to form sand waves. Last time I left at max neaps we only had 0.2M under the lifted keel ( 1.2M) in places and we were spot on time wise in what passed for high water at the end of the training walls - lots of bare mud either side. Not a place to venture in or out in NEs.

I agree with Cherbourg sentiments as well too many undesirables on the pontoons.

Go well west would be my advice perhaps as far as Morlaix and the Roscoff Ferry. Long way up river again however.
