Ref: Saturday afternoon alternative if weather is bad.

Magali Hamon, the very helpful Cherbourg Marina Development Manager, has sent the following to me "In the sailing club house, you will indeed be able to take your own supply of wine and snack - there is actually a nice terrasse and it might still be a nice idea to do your gathering there even if the weather is nice, but this is entirely up to you. I would be happy to present some of the port literature and to answer any questions that the rally participants may have about the marina and Cherbourg and its surroundings during this gathering."

So if the previous 4 yrs of Sunny afternoons for the Pontoon gatherings are not repeated in 2012 - thanks to Magali - we now have an alternative!!

I propose sticking to the YC for the Saturday meal which Magali assures me most other rallys/cruise groups do but she is trying to sort alternative restaurants. Many now aim to arrive on the Friday (those that visited St Vaast this year were not complimentary). We invited a person from another boat to join our group for a meal at Cafe de Paris this year on the Friday.

Any opinions of forming a few smaller groups (say up to 12) for a Friday restaurant meal? Each group goes to a different restaurant.

Can anyone remember the name of the Hotel and Restaurant we tried previously for the Saturday that was not a sucess? I can probably find one of them as I booked it!! Need to search my e mail archive.

I need to go back to Majestic Wine to complain. They did not have any of my cheap quaffing wine but offered to price match it with a dearer one. Very nice of them but I need to complain - wine is absolutely fantastic - and I did not buy enough!!

Nothing like getting things sorted early. Well done.

Dont suppose she is also finding out who is in charge of the weather next year to get that sorted :D

The credit should go to Magali who has kept in touch and asked if there was anything they could do to make the event better. Magali also attended the Wine and nibbles pontoon gathering this year so she is certainly putting in the effort to make Cherbourg as attractive as possible and encouraging more visitors.

Just like to see the right people get the credit

Thanks Magali for your efforts.

Anyone got any opinion of smaller groups eating at quality restaurants for the Friday night? I will certainly try to book a table somewhere for 12 and welcome some newbees to join us. I would try not to invite those I know fairly well (except my crew!) so that I can set an example of avoiding cliques that make new comers feel like outsiders.

How about, nearer the time, those who want to join a social group on the Friday night, register their interest, then with a little simple planning 'hosts' can head up each equally divided group. Hopefully that way no one gets left out and you dont finish with 3 in one group and 20 in another.

If you're seeking opinions Roger, I thought the meal in the yacht Club was absolutely fine and dandy and would be more than happy to do it again next year.
If however others want to try somewhere different next year I'll be happy with that too.

I think the idea is to keep the Saturday night yacht club do, but also get more organised about the Friday night. Quite a few people arrive during Friday and then go out to dinner in town.

In our case, Friday night was sausage and mash just after we sighted Cherbourg :)

Back in 04 we went a really naff hotel way out of town but I cant recall the name.
Probably a good thing too - we really wouldn't want to go back there again!

I still think the place we went to on the first of the Cherbourg trips was very good - can't remember the name but central, just across the road from the big "Cave"

It was owned by the same guy who owned Cave Dubegny (Sp?), across the car park and who did the wine tasting for us. He sold it now. Restaurant would be too small, although it does interconnect with the one next door. Yes it was nice but even both would still be too small I think.

Yacht Club on Saturday works well.

Yes - I was thinking for an informal Friday night

They should be able to take a moderate party in there - but if it has changed hands then perhaps it isn't what it once was

Yes yacht club, dont fix wot aint broke, theres enough work for the organisers let alone set up a new venue.

I agree.

It is nice to try other venues but every other one that we have tried, except possibly the first one at the Cave restaurant, have IMO been no better than the YC and most were worse.

Though if anyone wants a Friday night treat, I stumbled on L'Antidote this year and it is excellent.
