Tragic circumstance. Appaling loss of lives. What can we learn. Circumstance - large ingress of water. Look for cause/source, but what to do in the meantime? My boat has a raw water filter that services a sail drive leg so my main seacock is on the SD Leg. White hose leads from raw water filter to SD inlet. As per MAIB Report, if i start the engine to use the cooling pump as effectively a bilge pump, where does one start? Cut the white pipe at the raw water filter end, and point that at the wet stuff, or the SD end, or what?

Put a three way valve in the cooling water inlet and lock wire it open so that it never changes state unless very deliberately changed.
In a REAL emergency the engine cooling water pump can be used to drain the bilge. Remember that you don't want this to run dry!

Let's all hope we never need to go there.

Tony.

Do you use your SD seacock regularly as they are an awful design (well the Yanmar ones at least) and it might not actually be closing properly and it can be very difficult to tell. I thought mine was closing until I decided to test it by removing the top from the seawater filter and started pouring water from a jug down the central pipe with the seacock closed. After a few jugs you realise that you are never going to fill the pipe!
