I seem to remember reading about cheek blocks which can pop into the slot on the boom and then turn and 'lock' in place, does anyone know what I'm talking about, or did I imagine it?

This is turning blocks for a simple slab reefing system. My aluminium blocks are seized solid and I'd imagine taking the end of the boom is going to be a clusterfluck for various reasons.

I have never seen anything like what you are describing. Using cheek blocks is far from ideal as it tries to twist the boom when in use and will cause additional stress on the gooseneck. Also the lines dangle down when not in use and get caught on stuff. Definitely worth trying to resurrect the old sheaves and run them internally. Try removing the boom and heating the end casting or soaking it in thinners.

There are no internal sheaves on the boom, just cheek blocks, this seems original too. Although I understand your point. I have considered replacing the whole boom to get a better setup. Way down the list though!
