Decided to check the valve tappet clearances today, the found out my manual was a bit vague on the subject, and the workshop manual I have for the TMD40 on my last boat has differing settings and valve sequence.

So having established which valve was which actually setting this valves was straightforward.

So I thought I would write it down as an aide memoire for the next time I tackle this task.

Might be of use to some one, if so you can find the details here. The valve order is specific to the TAMD60C which has differing clearance settings on the inlet and exhaust, but the firing order should be the same for any 6 cylinder engine. If your engine has the same clearance for both valves then the specific sequence is not critical.

very usefull & easy to remember 4,6 & 8 cylinder engines are easy as the cylinders being adjusted usually ad up to one more than the no of cylinders in the engine I.E 0n a 4 cyl valves on no1 rocking set valves on no 4, 2&3,3&2,
4&1
a six 1&6 2&5 etc
an eight 1&8 2&7 3&5 etc

easy to remember now someone remind us how to do a 3 & 5 cylinder I always need a book for those!

I use the rule of thirteen on our 6 cylinders, i.e valve no 1 open adjust valve no 12. Starting from the front Timing case end. All the clearances on Fords are the same so pretty straight forward.

I am aware of the rule of 13 (number of valves plus 1), but the valve order on my VP is slightly odd, so I am not sure it works, I find the on the rock methiod cleaer to determine which valve pair is where.
