Never had any probs with Seagos

Just to clarify, and as stated in my original post, the jackets shown are NOT Seago. I rang Seago today and they were very helpful, in fact they are coming tomorrow to look at the jackets. Very commendable to my view and I don't want any confusion.

Sorry it was the way I typed it Solitaire - No confusion all I really meant was that my Seagos have been brilliant compared with some others I have used in the past - Its clear that you are having issues with a different manufacturer.

Well I do actually quite like the LJ but wanted to know why the blooming thing auto-inflated when I was at the helm on a particularly lumpy (and albeit quite wet) crossing (120Nm) to SCM from Majorca last year.

Emails sent to:
1) sales@spinlock.co.uk - 7 & 14/11/08
2) info@spinlock.co.uk - 17/11/08
3) complaints@spinlock.co.uk - 17/11/08

It inflated with a bang (as you would expect), I was at the helm at the time and it gave me quite a jolt. I have since re-armed and checked the LJ and all seems OK.

I contacted Spinlock inviting their comment, but they simply ignored my emails!

So I suppose the aesthetic quality of the LJ and construction of the bladder seems to be good, but back-up from the manufacturer very poor indeed, considering this could be a potential safety issue! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

With this post in mind while sorting all the cabin stuff today whilst its raining, I decided setting the 3 life jackets off and seeing how long they stay inflated was long over due.

Bloody glad I did!

The 20 year old crewsaver manual gas inflated right away with a tug on the doodah, its in the kitchen now holding air so far.

The pair of 5 year old Compass24 auto gas ones, both failed to inflate....

I think I might just replace the lot.

Just following on re Seago. I have to commend them. Following a phone call to check if the two jackets were part of the recall, a representative came down to the school and checked them out. He said they were not and dated back to 2002. He said he would take them away and check them out.

A few days later I received this email from Seago:

"Dear David ,

Our service technicians have now thoroughly tested the 2 Seago jackets you asked us to look at.

Basically the jackets passed the 12 hour pressure test they are required to , however the jackets are of an age that we would strongly recommend replacement. The reasons for this are that the jackets do not have any documented service records and therefore we have no basis to judge the quality of the servicing (if any) .

In view of the fact that safety is of 100% priority we feel these jackets should be withdrawn from service and replaced with new.

I hope you will receive the above comments to be in the best interests of safety.

Best regards "

Now I have not had dealings with Seago before but I have to say that the manner in which they have not only dealt with the recall of certain jackets in an exemplary manner they have also put themselves very much on my radar as far as service and customer care is concerned. I have been very impressed.
